Obituary

Katherine Mae Hackett Baer, age 47, passed away on November 25, 2025, at her home on Berry Lake in Oconto County.

Kate was born on September 16, 1978, in Chicago, Illinois.  Her family moved to Appleton, WI when Kate was beginning middle school.  She graduated from Appleton West and pursued her passion for storytelling by earning a degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. Kate began her professional career with the Oshkosh Northwestern, later writing for the Appleton Post Crescent, and was a contributor to Insight Magazine, along with many other freelance projects. Her words informed, inspired, and connected communities, a testament to her talent and dedication.

Kate met Brian Baer in 1996 and were married in 2002. Over 23 years of marriage they raised three children together: Jack, Grace, and Emily Baer. Her family was the center of her world; she poured her heart into every moment spent with them.  Kate's will to see the kids graduate high school and become adults fueled her strength and determination to persevere.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Robert and Carolyne Hackett, as well as her beloved brother Joseph Hackett. Their memories lived on through Kate's stories and the values she carried forward.  She is survived by brothers Edwin and Patrick Hackett, and sister Jennifer Hackett.

For fifteen years, Kate endured metastatic breast cancer. Her involvement with numerous cancer organizations not only provided support to others but also fostered lifelong relationships that deeply impacted everyone fortunate enough to know her. Through advocacy and empathy, she turned personal struggle into collective strength.

Kate's life was rich with passions that reflected her generous spirit. She loved traveling, visiting and hosting friends and family, swimming in the lake, reading books, writing stories, and listening to music.

Kate was a loving soul whose presence brought out joy in others. Her ability to connect deeply with people left an indelible mark on countless lives. She was a mother, daughter, partner, sister, friend, Pachamama, a GD magical unicorn.  We will remember her not only for what she did but for how she made others feel: seen, heard, and loved.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Kate throughout her journey and wishes love and peace to everyone touched by this wonderful soul.

A celebration of Kate's life will be held after the Holidays.
