IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry Patrick
"Maxkweenno" Madden
April 10, 1956 – November 19, 2025
I t is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle, friend, and partner – Maxkweenno – Larry Patrick Madden on November 19, 2025. His birth on April 10, 1956 to the late Jerome "Jerry" Madden and Vera (Malone) Madden in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, marked the beginning of his lifelong bond to Door County. Larry lived and traveled to many places but always considered Door County his home. Although he loved his home there, he wished his final home to be among his relatives, the Mohican people, near the powwow grounds in Bowler, Wisconsin.
During his earth walk, Larry tried his hand in many different trades and pastimes. He was a pipefitter in the shipyards, proudly worked on the Turtle School in Oneida, and various projects around the state and country. He spent many years as a woodsman, hunter, and guide, raising many fine champion Plott hounds along the way. He raced stockcars in his younger years and was a biker, riding his Harley with his Bay Area Ratzz (BAR) motorcycle family, as well as the many other brothers he made on the road.
Many knew Larry from his time on the powwow circuit as a singer, emcee, and dancer. We always gave him a hard time about "Bear Man" the myth, the man, the legend… But he met so many people that way and he loved every minute of it. Everyone who met Larry knew that he was someone who never met a stranger. He loved to spin a tale or two, and he loved to share his family and tribal history.
He was a true Renaissance man, loved writing, beading, painting, and lately being a pie man! But finding his place as a Mohican man and his voice as a Mahican speaker was the passion in his life. With his kindred spirits, Brock, Chris, Kanaysa, and many others – he reveled in exploring, learning, and growing his language knowledge and history.
He now goes on to join all the ancestors that came before including his parents, his oldest sister Estella Ayers, brother-in-law Vern Church, and nephew Gary Fooit. His BAR bros: Chief, Farmer, Michigan, Mac, and many, many other loved ones and friends.
Those left to mourn include his loving partner Becky Halstead, his sisters Jeanie Church and Judy (Jeff) Heubel. Nieces Kathryn Footit, Sarah Madden, Missy Church, Amiee Footit, and Annabelle Heubel. Nephews Matt (Dawn) Church, Jed (Diana) Heubel, and Andrew Heubel, and special cousin Leonard Phillips. The little ones that called him Grandpa – Marvin, Lyela, and Zyeir, along with their moms Carey, Anna, and grandma Monica. Many other cousins, relatives, and friends will dearly miss him.
A fire will be lit at his sister Judy's home N9536 Moh He Con Nuck Road, Bowler, Wisconsin, much appreciation to Brock and Lenny for organizing. Please feel free to stop by any time after 6pm on Thursday. On Sunday around noon, we will hold a eulogy service – please bring your stories to share, then he will be laid to rest in the Stockbridge Cemetery among his relatives. A memorial and celebration of life will be held in Door County in the spring.
