Leo Arthur Sperberg, age 83 of the Town of Richmond, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Leo was born on August 28, 1937 to the late Herbert and Dorothy (Regal) Sperberg in Shawano. Leo was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Red River his entire life. He was baptized on September 19, 1937, sponsors were Mrs. George Sperberg and Mr. Alfred Regal, and was confirmed on June 15, 1952. On September 20, 1958, Leo was united in marriage to Jane McCarthy at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suring. They lived all their married life in rural Town of Richmond, Shawano County.
Leo worked construction all his working years, working for Harry Sperberg, Bloomer Construction, and finally as a mechanic for Reliance Construction. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 139 since September 1958. Leo was proud that all his sons are Operating Engineers and several of his grandsons are also.
Leo enjoyed hunting up north by Armstrong Creek all his life with his dad, sons, grandsons, brothers, their sons, as well as other family and friends every year. He loved his trips to Canada fishing for several years. After retirement Leo had a big garden and canned all the food that he produced. He made the best pickles and sauerkraut, as well as canning Venison. Leo also enjoyed doing some woodworking in his spare time. He enjoyed making maple syrup, watching gunsmoke, and reading. Jane and Leo camped form many years taking the grandkids along almost every time, enjoying them and their camping family. They were members of the Wolf River Wanders Camping Club, which they helped organize. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family every chance he got. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Together Leo and Jane had five sons, David of Shawano, Daniel (Bonnie) of Pine River, Duane (Nioami) of Cecil, Donald (Bonnie) of Shawano, and Dennis (Billie Jo) of Laona. Leo is also survived by his wife of 62 years, Jane; grandchildren, Caleb (Madison) Sperberg of Shawano, Travis (Sara) Sperberg of Platteville, Kyle Sperberg of Kaukauna, Sean Sperberg of Milwaukee, Dillion (Sam) Sperberg of Shawano, Sammi Jo (Kyle) Rosenberg of Shawano, Desi (Cody) Owen of Pulaski, Jesse (Megan) Sperberg of Shawano, Tyler (Jamie) Sperberg of Shawano, Alex Sperberg of Shawano and Brittany Sperberg of Appleton; great-grandchildren, Dominik Sperberg and Audra Sperberg of Shawano, Natalie Sperberg of Shawano, Joseph Sperberg and Ellie Mae Sperberg of Platteville, and Josie Sperberg of Shawano; brothers and sisters, Audrey Sperberg of Shawano, Louie (Karen) Sperberg of Schofield, Curtis (Robin) Sperberg of Clintonville, and Susan (Roger) Pahlow of Shawano; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bernard (Marcy) McCarthy of Gillett, Mary Leisch of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Joan Smola of Green Bay, Ray (Shirley) Buhrandt of Suring, Joe (Wanda) McCarthy of Coleman and Pat (Michelle Landvick) McCarthy of Suring. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Dorothy (Regal) Sperberg; brother, Leroy Sperberg; father and mother-in-law, Bernard and Helen (Boerschinger) McCarthy; daughter-in-law, Anna Sperberg; brothers-in-law, William Leisch, John McCarthy, Michael McCarthy, and Tom Smola; and sister-in-law, Cheryl McCarthy.
A funeral service for Leo will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with Mr. Richard Menning officiating. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until the time of service.
The family of Leo would like to extend a special thank you to ThedaCare at Home Hospice, Cherry Meadows and the nursing staff, Jolene, Molly, Kristy, Krista, and Bonnie, as well as all our family members who helped take care of Leo this last year.
