August 29, 1967 – September 29, 2024
Leon Anthony Nahwahquaw, Sr., Onuahtam Namaeqsaehkaew (one enjoys catching fish) age 57, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday September 29, 2024, in Appleton. Leon was born August 29, 1967, in Claremore, Oklahoma to Bernice (Kapishkowit) Shawano and the late Dennis Nahwahquaw. On October 12, 2001, he was united in marriage to Sonja Wayka in Keshena. Leon enjoyed being in the woods and found peace working at R&R Tree Service. He was known for his sense of humor and teasing nature. Leon loved outdoor activities with friends and family, such as camping, fishing and riding in the woods. His biggest passion was spending time with his children, grandchildren and family. Leon was a wonderful, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend; he will be deeply missed.
Leon is survived by his wife, Sonja; children, Leon Nahwahquaw, Jr., Cody Nahwahquaw, August Nahwahquaw, Mark Johnson and Jered Corn; grandchildren, Leland Nahwahquaw and Rebecca Nahwahquaw; mother, Bernice Shawano; and siblings, Val (Mark) Self, Muriel Waupoose, Rose (Shannon) Tucker, George Nahwahquaw, Sr., Mary Nahwahquaw, Denise (Nahwahquaw) Black, Leighton LaMotte, Lisa LaMotte, Jerry Nahwahquaw, Marquise LaMotte, Kemawin Dess and Twila Shawano. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Leon is preceded in death by father, Dennis; siblings, Susan Waupoose, Norman Waupoose, Jr., and Leland LaMotte; maternal grandparents, George "Kechemow" Kapishkowit and Susan Menomin; and paternal grandparents, Joseph Nahwahquaw and Mary Waupoose.
A funeral service for Leon will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday October 2, 2024, in the commons at the College of Menominee Nation, N172 St. Hwy 47/55 Keshena, WI 54135 with Dave Grignon officiating. Visitation will be held in the commons at the college starting on Tuesday October 1, 2024, from 2:00 pm and continuing until the time of service on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Menominee Nation Cemetery in Middle Village following the service.
