Obituary

Leroy "Lee" Joseph Hiltgen, age 82, of Tilleda, passed away peacefully at Shawano Medical Center with family by his side on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 after a battle with multiple serious medical problems. Leroy was born on January 16, 1933 in Sheboygan, the son of the late Arthur and Margaret "Peg" (Zabel) Hiltgen. He was active in scouting as a youth and became an Eagle Scout with bronze palm in 1949 with Troop 57 in Sheboygan. He graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1951, he entered military service in the United States Army. After basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, he was stationed in occupied Germany from 1953-1955. He was trained as a radio operator specializing in Morse code. Related to this, he was an amateur radio operator (HAM), WA8PHL, throughout young adulthood. He initially worked as a TV repairman for Van's in Sheboygan, then received formal training in electronics and transistor theory from MSOE in Milwaukee. He worked as an electrical engineer at Heath Co. (Heath-Zenith) in Michigan many years, then in the mid-1970s was owner of Tilleda Falls Campground. He also completed EMT training during this era. He worked for FWD-Seagrave in Clintonville, WI where he designed truck electrical systems from 1979 until he retired. In his spare time Lee loved camping, fishing, hunting, and trapping. He spent summers of the late 1960s and 1970s tent camping throughout the USA with his young family. He taught his sons a love and appreciation of these outdoor activities as well. In his later years he enjoyed many camping, hunting and fishing trips with his wife Mary and her family in the Tilleda area as well as upper Michigan. Lee was an active member of American Legion Post #390 in Gresham, WI and Peace Lutheran Church in Tilleda, past Vice President of Peace Lutheran Church Brotherhood and the Tilleda Advancement Club. Leroy is survived by: his wife, Mary; four sons, Jeffrey (Lorrainne) of Mountain Green, UT, Dr. Gregrey (Gina) of Waupaca, Dr. Daniel (Angie) of Washington D.C., and Christopher (Dr. Amy Sevais) of Appleton; nine grandchildren, Hiliary, Geoff, Tad, Megan, Carsten, Shelby, Greta, Odyssius, and Zanarkan; four great grandchildren, Breah, Reagan, Greyson, and Dominic; one sister, Susan (Eugene) Chuvan of Sheboygan as well as niece Debra Krueger, and nephew Andrew Chuvan. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church on Tilleda with Lay Pastor Lois Graper officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Gresham Legion Post #390. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home on Sunday, August 16, 2015 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and again on Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
