Obituary

Martha Minnie Westphal, age 94, of Bonduel, passed away Friday, June 17, 2016 at her home. Born on November 30, 1921 in Green Valley, she was the daughter of the late Gustav and Emma (Kroening) Bohm. On December 8, 1942 Martha was united in marriage to Wilmar C. Westphal at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in the Town of Angelica. "How Great Thou Art" was her favorite song and "Portals of Prayer" her daily meditation. Martha Westphal was a fabulous cook and highly skilled gardener. Her care for family was contagious. Her work was love made visible. Martha's farm home was a haven to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her kitchen and gardens and generously shared her prepared foods, plants, flowers and vegetables for over 70 years. Her dill pickles, potato salad, and chicken dumpling soup live on. Her "crazy quilts" with feather stitching are treasured by each of her children and grandchildren. Martha will be remembered for her boundless energy and as a person who was always kind and willing to help anyone.

Martha was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. As a member of Mission Circle she prepared many foods and served hundreds of meals over 70 years at weddings, church celebrations, and funerals. With her husband she counted offering money and delivered audio/visual materials to elderly shut-ins. With her sewing skills, she contributed extensively to the quilt-making donations of that group. She served the community as a volunteer on election days. Her O-negative blood was sought frequently and she willingly donated. She enjoyed, and was competitive, in bowling and card playing. Dominoes and word search games were other favorite pastimes. With family, she enjoyed travel to Germany, Israel, British Columbia, Canada, and Mexico as well as many USA states. She vacationed each summer on Wisconsin or Minnesota lakes and was an avid fisherman. She mastered the sport of sturgeon fishing. In winter, she enjoyed the warm weather and oceans of Florida and Mexico so she vacationed there.

Martha is survived by: two daughters, Judy (Manuel) Arco and Susan (Glenn) Berkhahn; five sons, Gary (Janet) Westphal, Thomas (Christine) Westphal, Daniel (Judy) Westphal, Joel (Pamela) Westphal, and Steven Westphal; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband of 69 years, Wilmar; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Monroe Westphal; her parents; four brothers, Henry, Herbert, Fred, and Hilbert; and six sisters, Hulda Lohrengel, Anna Nooyen Leanna, Lydia Meyer, Eleanor Schaetzle, Hertha Hanstedt, and her twin sister, Mary Bohm, in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel with Rev. Mark R. Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
