Mary Jane "Monih" James, of Neopit, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the Wolf River CBRF. Mary Jane was born on October 8, 1918 and had recently celebrated her 94th birthday with her beloved family. She was the oldest of nine children born to the late Peter and Louise (Waupoose) Askenette and was the last surviving member of her family. In her younger years, Mary Jane attended Flandreau Indian School. After returning home to the Menominee Indian Reservation, she met and married Dennison James on August 27, 1936. They celebrated 69 years of marriage and the birth of 9 sons and 4 daughters prior to his passing on September 13, 2005. Mary Jane was an avid housewife who also worked a few part-time jobs including a cook at the Neopit Public School, a cashier at Boivin's Store and a housekeeper at MTE until her retirement. She also spent many years as a local seamstress for the Neopit community while also sewing for her own family. Mary Jane's hobbies included shooting pool, bowling, playing bingo, playing cards, spending time at the Lake Lot, watching the Menominee Chiefs baseball team, and of course, watching her favorite, the Green Bay Packers. In January of 2012, Mary Jane was honored by the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin as one of the five eldest living Menominees. For the past four years of her life, she had made her home at the Wolf River CBRF where she was often visited by her children and grandchildren who will sadly miss her. Mary Jane is survived by: 10 children, Violet "Jitter" (Robert) Tucker of Neopit, Karen J. (Clifford) Wilber of Shawano, Melvin J. "Mousie" (Sherry) James of Keshena, Gordon A. James of Neopit, Robert "Bobby" (Ruth) James of Oshkosh, Anthony W. James of Shawano, Deanna "Diane" (John) Boivin of Neopit, David K. (Bridgett) James of DeForest, Stanley R. "Bull" (Patty) James of South Branch, Glenda (Dale) Kaquatosh of Keshena; 57 grandchildren; 114 great-grandchildren; and 40+ great great-grandchildren. Mary Jane was preceded in death by: her husband, Dennison; 3 sons, Dennis "Tonto" Jr., Marvin "Joe Brown" and Richard James; her parents; 4 brothers and 4 sisters; 3 grandsons; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Neopit with the Rev. David McElroy O Praem officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held at the College of Menominee Nation Campus Commons Building, N172 State Hwy 47/55, Keshena starting at 6:00 p.m. Thursday until the procession leaves for the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
