Mary Ann Maki, age 81 of Shawano, WI and formerly of Waukegan, IL, passed away November 12, 2018 in Shawano after a brief illness. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Mary Ann was born at home in Ridgway, IL during the 1937 flood. She was the first born of eleven children of the late Radolph A. and Dorothy (Drone) Zirkelbach. The family moved to Gurnee, IL in 1945 and Mary Ann attended St. Anastasia School and Holy Child High School in Waukegan. She was a student at Rosemont College and Villanova University in Pennsylvania.
Mary Ann married Melvin D. Maki on May 7, 1960 and were married almost fifty years. They raised two daughters. She is preceded in death by: her husband, Mel in 2005; daughters, Lisa Maki Logan in 2016 and Angie Maki Andersen in 2018; her parents; and five siblings, Ranny, Mike, infant twins Dora & Nora and Judy Thomas.
Survivors include: five siblings, Rachel Lee of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Gerald Zirkelbach of Oro Valley, AZ, Thomas (Dawn) Zirkelbach of Huddleston, VA, Patrick (Margaret) Zirkelbach of Gurnee, IL and Donald (Jacqueline) Zirkelbach of Brooklyn, MI; son-in-law, Michael Andersen of Machesney Park, IL; brother-in-law, Robert Thomas of Salem, WI; sister-in-law, Sheila Maki of Bandara, TX; four grandchildren, Myles, Brookelynn, Jennifer and Jordan; five great-grandchildren; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She retired from Fansteel after 40 years at VR Wesson and the corporate offices. Proud to be a Woman Marine Reservist, she flew the Marine Corps flag at her riverfront residence and watched passing boaters pause to salute. Semper fi.
Mary Ann and Mel were great sports enthusiasts and were ticket holders of the Green Bay Packers since 1960. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Shawano, Shawano Red Hat Loon-A -Tics, and a widow's social group. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, dancing, traveling and visiting with family and friends.
The viewing will be 10:00 am Friday, November 16, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, WI with a Mass of Christian burial immediately following at 11:00; a private burial will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, IL.
