Melvin Martin "Woweaska" VerHaagh, Jr., age 54, of Lac Da Flambeau, passed away on Thursday November 9, 2023, in Oconto Falls. Melvin was born on October 30, 1969, in Antigo to Diana Thunder and the late Melvin VerHaagh, Sr. He graduated from Menominee High School in 1988. Melvin was a blackjack dealer at the Menominee Casino and Lac Da Flambeau Casino for many years. He enjoyed being outdoors, making fires and was an avid breakdancer in his early years. Melvin loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and siblings. He will be dearly missed.
Melvin is survived by his daughters, Diana "Waupy" VerHaagh, Melinda "Notenokwae" (Matthew Armstrong) VerHaagh, Michelle "Madajwen" Dick and Angel "Giwejwen" Dick; granddaughter, Madalynn "Wapanukiw" Armstrong; mother, Diana Thunder; mother of his children, Lana (Scott) Fox; and siblings, Bernard (Laura) Doud, Dewey (Emily) Thunder, Deanna "Mohawk" VerHaagh. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Melvin is preceded in death by his grandmother, Helen "Mashakatokie" Thunder; sister, Melanie VerHaagh; nephew, Dewey Thunder, Jr.; and granddaughter, Alizah Martin.
Big Drum Traditional burial will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday November 12, 2023, at Zoar Burial Grounds. Visitation will be held at Zoar Ceremonial Building on Friday November 10, 2023, starting at 4:00 pm and continuing until Sunday at 2:00 pm.
