Mercedes Celeste Hernandez, "Sadie Butt", age 19 of Neopit, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 26, 2021, in Milwaukee. Mercedes was born in Shawano on January 4, 2002, daughter of Sheila and Mike Shawanokasic of Neopit and Salvador "Chava" Hernandez, Jr., of Keshena. Mercedes was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Mercedes graduated from Menominee Indian High School with the class of 2020. After graduation, Mercedes went to work at Menominee Casino Resort as a Security Guard and she was currently working at Taco Bell as a Team Member. During high school, Mercedes was an avid player of volleyball, basketball, and softball. She excelled well in all sports, receiving numerous awards throughout the sports seasons. She also received a scholarship to UWGB-Marinette. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. In her spare time, Mercedes loved babysitting for her nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also loved riding around with her family and friends.
Mercedes is survived by her parents: Sheila and Mike Shawanokasic and Salvador Hernandez, Jr., her special friend: Devante Horton and his mom, Keke of Oshkosh, her grandparents: Leroy and Liz Shawanokasic of Keshena and Roxanne Kaquatosh of Kenosha and Salvador Hernandez, Sr. of Mexico, her siblings: Chantz Hernandez, Salvador Hernandez, Jr., Alysia (Veloquice) Hawkins, Alfred Hernandez, Elexus Hernandez, Faith Shawanokasic, Brian Shawanokasic, and William Hernandez. Mercedes is also survived by her uncles and aunts: Jerry Rescigno of Kenosha, Mary A. Shawanokasic and Mark Shawanokasic of Keshena, Starla Hernandez and Yolanda Kaquatosh of Green Bay and many other numerous aunts and uncles. She is further survived by her special sister, Payton Smith and her special cousins, Caitelyn Shawanokasic and Shaylea Hernandez, her nieces and nephew: Isabella, Arielle, Brooklyn and Isaiah, as well as her godmother: Linda Orie of Madison.
She was preceded in death by: her grandparents, Annette (Doutre) and John Ryan, Vincent Rescigno, Helen and Alfred Kaquatosh and special uncle, William "Billy Jack" Wheelock.
A funeral mass for Mercedes will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 11 am with Fr. Hanz Christian officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Shawanokasic residence, N3598 1 st Ave, Neopit, on Sunday, August 29, 2021, at 3:00 pm until procession leaves for church on Wednesday.
