Mercedes Martinez, age 29 of Bowler, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 in Neenah. Born on December 21, 1982 in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of the late Jean Ann Doxtater Martinez and was raised by her beloved grandmother, Vaughn LaBelle. After graduating from Bowler High School, Mercedes traveled to Japan with the International Folk Dancers. Mercedes was crowned Miss Moh He Con Nuck in 1995. She loved to dance, listen to music and along with her grandmother enjoyed running a craft stand at many of the Pow-Wows. She also enjoyed going to Bingo and would gladly be the designated driver for all of her friends. She was a kind, loving person and considered everyone in the world her auntie or her uncle. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mercedes is survived by: her grandmother, Vaughn LaBelle of Bowler; her sister, Marita Martinez of Bowler; 3 uncles, Kelly (Rebecca) Doxtater of Bowler, David (Paula) Doxtater of Oshkosh, Mark (Simone) Doxtater of Bowler; 3 nieces, Takoah Fowler, Taliah Smith, Tamyah Herrera; numerous cousins; and many beloved family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness near Bowler with the Rev. Melinda Shriner officiating. Burial will be in the Stockbridge Indian Burial Grounds. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 4-8pm and on Wednesday from 10am until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting the family with the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
