Norman "Woody" Davis, age 85, passed away at the Cottages Assisted Living Memory Care in Shawano on Tuesday February 28, 2023. Woody was born in Alexander City, Alabama on January 21, 1938, to the late Earl Woodroe and Francis (Louis) Davis. Following graduation from high school in Waterloo, Wisconsin he attended the University of Houston for one and a half years before transferring to UW La Crosse, where he earned a degree in education. Woody began his teaching and coaching career in Melrose, Wisconsin. On June 23, 1962, he was united in marriage to Donna Petterson, in Melrose. In 1964 Woody and Donna moved to Shawano where he taught and coached until retiring in 1998. Woody had a passion and dedication to the youth of Shawano working with them in all areas of athletics. Upon retiring he enjoyed attending community and school events, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. Woody enjoyed representing the city of Shawano (Ward 3) on the city council for 18 years. He was extremely proud to have the opportunity to take the 1982 basketball team to the WIAA State Basketball Tournament. Woody was proud to have been a member of the first class of coaches to be inducted into the Shawano High School Hall of Fame, it was very special to him.
Woody is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna; his sons, Todd (Jean) and Scott; his grandson, Zachary; and his brother Gene (Cathy). He is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
Woody is preceded in death by his parents, several in-laws and his sister.
A gathering for family and friends will take place on March 9, 2023, from 3:00pm until 7:00 pm, at Zion Lutheran Church. A private memorial service will be held at a later date, in accordance with Woody's wishes. In lieu of flowers and other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Shawano Athletic Booster Club, Zion Lutheran Church, an Alzheimer's foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice .
The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the staff at the Cottages Memory Care Unit, ProMedica, and Hartland Hospice, for all of their kindness, patience, and compassion shown to Woody and the family.
