Obituary

Richard W. Umland, age 84, of Shawano, known to many as "Dick", passed away at home under the care of his loving family on Friday March 10, 2023. He was born in Shawano on July 24, 1938, to the late Rueben F. and Lucille (Schmeisser) Umland. Dick attended St. James Lutheran School, through eighth grade and graduated from Shawano High School in 1956. He met Jackie while with friends at the beach at Cloverleaf Lake. On August 9, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to Jacquelyn "Jackie" Schweitzer at the St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano, where the couple are still members. They were looking forward to their 65 th wedding anniversary in August. Dick served the church in many capacities, from finance to trustee, until his declining health affected his ability to continue.

Dick followed in his dad's footsteps, owning and operating Umland's Painting. Some of Dick's rewarding work can be seen in over 25 churches. He was proud of his business, retaining several faithful customers over the years… you know who you are! Known as the "Magic Man", Dick was always finding creative ways to get things done… perfectly! He had a great crew, which included Mark, Ted and his son Rob for many years. In addition to his seasonal staff.

He enjoyed gathering with friends to play cards, such as Three Lunger, Criss Cross and Poker… even including the wives. Their routine included dinner, then cards and cocktails, each couple taking turns hosting the evening. Dick was a Little League Coach through the Legion, where he made a ton of baseball friends throughout the years. He was known as "Mr. Um" to his "guys". The most meaningful, was coaching his son Rob. Dick was his grandchildren's #1 fan and attended ALL their events, including traveling to Michigan for his girls. Robbie, Alec, Noah, Adam and Carter, could always hear their grandpa up in the stands during games and would always talk with them after about their performance. He looked forward to his nightly calls and prayer with his granddaughter, Afton. He enjoyed his visits with Lacey when she could make it back to town.

Dick cherished all the time spent at "The Shack" on his land in the Town of Matson, where he enjoyed feeding the birds, planting corn, raising Christmas trees and drinking beer. He looked forward to hunting with his hunting family, the Stuecks. Dick was especially fond of duck hunting, earning the name "Dead-Eye" given to him by his Uncle Ralph, for his exceptional aim. Dick was honored to pass the name on to his grandson, Adam Richard. The Umland Family spent endless hours shearing the Christmas trees on their land in preparation for the holidays… this time was very special for Dick and his son-in-law, Brian. Dick and Jackie loved to travel, making it to all but three states. They also loved camping up north and trout fishing with friends, Frank and Sandy Wegner. Dick's trout fishing stories and stories in general will forever live on in our hearts.

Dick is survived by his wife, Jackie; son-in-law, Bob (Kathy) Hoch of Macomb, MI; his children, Robert "Robby" Umland of Shawano, Carrie (Brian) Beilfuss of Bonduel; grandchildren, Lacey (Preston) Cichoski, Afton Hoch, Robbie Umland, Alec Umland, Treasure (Cody) Bergaman, Noah, Adam, and Carter Beilfuss; great-grandchildren, Logan Cichoski, Aiden, Wyatt and Riley Bergman. He is further survived by his sisters, Mary Schabow of Hobart and Jean Umland of Shawano; his uncle, Ken Geline of NY; his aunt, Adeline Hein of Shawano; numerous other relatives and many special friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Christine "Chris" Hoch; his parents, Rueben and Lucille; brother, Fritz (Mary) Umland; brother-in-law, Art Schabow; and sister, JoAnn (Mike) Morrin.
