IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert H.
"Bob" Young
June 26, 1945 – November 17, 2023
Robert H. "Bob" Young, age 78, of Shawano, passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side on Friday, November 17, 2023. After nine years, he is joyfully reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Bonnie. Bob was born in Shawano on June 26, 1945, to the late Harold and Florence (Fritz) Young. He grew up in Cecil and attended Bonduel High School where he played football and ran track, graduating in 1964. Bob held several track records for over 20 years. On September 4, 1965, Bob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Bonnie, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Cecil. Bob was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 and fought in The Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal before receiving his honorable discharge. He was recently honored to go on an Old Glory Honor Flight for Vietnam Veterans in 2014. Bob worked at Eagle Knit in Shawano along with Bonnie when they were young. He went on to work at Packerland Packing Co. driving a bread truck and he eventually retired from the Shawano Papermill after 38 years where he worked as a pipefitter in the maintenance department.
Bob was always there to help others, without any hesitation, night or day. He loved spoiling his grandkids and attending school concerts and recitals. He was an animal lover and was converted from a dog person to a cat person. He had a great sense of humor and was always cracking jokes, mostly jokes only he understood. Bob enjoyed outdoor activities including boating, water skiing, and making ice rinks on the lake. He loved fishing and took several trips to Canada. He enjoyed deer hunting and going to the gun range with his son in law, Tom. He enjoyed vacationing with family and friends, bowling with his league team, and attending stockcar races in Shawano on Saturday nights. Bob loved putting together model ships, cars and planes, reading history books, watching Nascar and the Packers, watching old westerns, and loved to drive his red corvette, "Nonnie".
Bob is survived by his children, Dawn and Jennifer (Tom); five grandchildren, Sabrina, Racheal, Hannah, Xanatos, and Zecharich; 2 step-grandchildren, Neil and Chris, and 5 step-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; a daughter, Melissa; two sisters, Marilyn and Rita; and his parents.
A memorial service for Bob will be held at 11:00 am on Friday December 1, 2023, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Cecil with Rev. Moira Finley officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30am until the time of the service. The burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano following services. Memorials can be directed to the Wounded Warriors Project at woundedwarriorsproject.org.
