Obituary

Robert F. Van Handel, age 87, passed away on Thursday, June 23 rd , 2022 at his home in Shawano.  Bob was born in the Town of Vandenbroek on September 25, 1934, son of the late Joseph and Harriet (Hietpas) Van Handel.  After high school Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country honorably in Korea from 1952 until receiving his honorable discharge in 1955.  On April 24, 1957, Bob married the love of his life Mildred "Millie" Hartjes in Combined Locks.  Bob and Millie spent time living in Appleton and Kimberly raising their five children.  In his younger years Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Bob worked as a truck driver for Fore Way Express until retiring at the age of 57.  After retiring Bob and Millie moved to Elcho, enjoying retirement on Post Lake before moving to Legend Lake in Keshena.  In his free time Bob enjoyed watching the Packers, the Brewers, and NASCAR.  One of the recent highlights of his life was taking the Old Glory Honor flight with his daughter in September of 2018.  He thoroughly enjoyed the experience and spoke fondly of it often.  Bob was a strong and caring man with a big heart.  He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by the family he leaves behind.

Bob is survived by: his loving wife of 65 years, Millie; his children, Lynn (Jeff Van Dyn Hoven) Van Handel, Ginger (Gary) Kerkhoff, Julie Van Handel, Laurie (Bob) Wolff, and Robert "Bobby" (Lori) Van Handel; four grandchildren, Josh (Liz) Wilson, Matt (fiancé Holly Brockman) Wilson, Lindsay (Andrew) Kraemer, and McKayla Van Handel; six great grandchildren, Maddie, Dalylah, Barrett, Wyatt, Lola, and Olivia; and five siblings, Leone Benner, Sister Jolene Van Handel, Jerome (Phyllis) Van Handel, Beverly (Jerry) Gartzke, and Glenn (Mary) Van Handel.  He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Preceding Bob in death are his parents and a sister, Judy Van Handel.

A memorial service for Bob will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano at 11:00am on Thursday, June 30 th , 2022, with Deacon Jim Lonick officiating.  Military Honors will be conducted by the Shawano American Legion at the funeral home following the service.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:30am until the time of the memorial service. Memorials can be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Robert's name.
