Samuel Paul Hawpetoss, Sr., age 89 of Neopit, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in Shawano. Born on August 9, 1924 in McCord, he was the son of the late Paul and Josephine (Jack) Hawpetoss. Samuel was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy for more than three years during World War II. At the time of his Honorable Discharge on August 17, 1946, Sam had achieved the rank of Fireman 1st Class and had received several medals and ribbons including a Navy Unit Commendation and World War II Victory Ribbon. In 1960 Sam moved to Milwaukee where he worked as a boilermaker and was a member of the Local Boilermakers Union #107 in Milwaukee. In 1976 he returned to this area and had made his home in the Neopit area ever since. He was united in marriage to Frances Matchapatow in Keshena. Sam worked hard his entire life and found enjoyment in hunting and fishing. Samuel is survived by: his 5 children, Jerry Hawpetoss of Neopit, John (Leah Besaw) Hawpetoss of Neopit, Rebecca Hawpetoss of Keshena, Judy (Pete Shawanokasic) Hawpetoss of Keshena, Sam "Lam" Hawpetoss, Jr. of Keshena; numerous grandchildren including a special grandson, Hunter Hawpetoss; and numerous great-grandchildren. Samuel was preceded in death by: 3 children, Nina, Glenn, Dale; his parents; a brother; and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Hawpetoss residence, 3639 3rd Ave., Dog Town, Neopit. Burial will be in the Our Lady of the Woods Cemetery in West Branch with Military Rites conducted by the Menominee American Legion Post #497 and the Veterans of the Menominee Nation. Visitation will be held at the house from noon on Friday until the time of the service on Saturday.
