IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sidney Lawrence
Maas, Jr.
May 28, 1941 – September 20, 2019
Sidney Lawrence Maas, Jr., age 78, of Tilleda, WI, peacefully passed on Friday evening, September 20, 2019, at his home in the presence of his family. Sid was born on May 28, 1941 in Tilleda and is the son of the late Sidney Sr. and Laura (Preuss) Maas. Sid grew up in Tilleda and was a 1959 graduate of Bowler High School. After graduation, Sid joined the family logging business working closely with his father and his uncle Martin Maas. Sid also worked summers for Torborg Lumber in Clintonville on a construction crew. On September 8, 1962, he was united in marriage to Bonnie (Bowman) Maas at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham. Sid soon began his own small business centered around the logging, sawmill, and forestry industry that would last nearly six decades. Sid was an absolute expert sawyer with his chainsaws making the often difficult job of felling trees look easy. For much of his early married life, Sid and his family, alongside his uncle Martin, made high quality maple syrup tapping thousands of their own trees north of Tilleda. Later, Sid built large kilns to make all-natural, hardwood charcoal after learning the process from the Dutch living near Cedar Grove, WI. Sid planted hundreds of thousands of seedling pines for the DNR and private landowners every spring with a tractor and pull-behind planter while establishing his own Christmas tree plantation. During the last thirty years of Sid's active working life, he operated a small sawmill on his property near Tilleda cutting millions of board feet of lumber for the pallet mill industry always working with his family especially his son, Tom. During those final thirty years of his career, Sid continued his logging business to help many local landowners manage their woods and he took special pride in managing and harvesting timber from his own woods. Sid worked well into his later years until illness took his ability to do physical work. During his life, Sid was a charter member of the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association. In 1984, Sid was recognized by the Wisconsin Society of American Foresters (Fox Valley Chapter) for his work in the timber industry winning the Outstanding Performance Award in the Logging/Contractor category.
Sidney and Bonnie raised two sons and lived for over fifty-five years at their home in the town of Seneca. Sidney hunted deer on his property and shared his woods with multitudes of other family members and friends for many decades. Sidney loved trout fishing throughout his life and Canadian fishing trips, snowmobiling, attending high school basketball games, playing cards, and stock car races at Shawano Speedway. Sid loved his time spent at his parents' cabin on Lac Vieux Desert in Vilas County and later he had his own cabin on the lake, enjoying fishing with his wife and boys while living a joyful life on the big lake.
Sidney was married to his loving wife for over fifty-seven years often working beside each other in the various business ventures and sharing the same interests in life. Sid is survived by his wife Bonnie, son Tim (Amy) Maas of Marion and son Tom (Ann) Maas of Shawano; grandchildren, Benjamin and Alice Maas; step-grandchildren, Katerina, Tristan, and Derek Hockin; brother, Robert (Gail) Maas; sister Delores (Jim) Kersten of Appleton; brothers in law, Roger Rosenow and Pete Bowman both of Gresham; good friends, Dick Beyer, Jim (Yvonne) Brandt of Tigerton, Buddy (Karen) Wissman of Caroline, Howard Hundrieser and David (Gloria) Matthiae all of Marathon. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
Sidney Maas, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Joan Rosenow.
