Viola Frances Powless, age 82 of Shawano, formerly of Neopit, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013 in Shawano. Born on January 18, 1931 in Keshena, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma (Hawpetoss) Maskewit. After attending college, Viola lived Chicago for 22 years and in Antigo for a short time. She worked for the U.S. Post Office part time for several years. In 1976 she returned to the Neopit area where she worked as a Guidance Counselor for the Menominee Elementary School. Viola was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She also volunteered for Shawano Hospice and served on the Great Lakes Intertribal Council Board on Aging. She enjoyed playing bingo and was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers. Viola is survived by: 6 children, Myrtle (Steven "Moss") Kitson of Keshena, Roberta Westerfield of Chicago, Janelle L. Powless of Keshena, Jennie (Roger) Skenandore of Shawano, Grady Powless of San Francisco, CA, Tim Joadwine of Chippewa Falls; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Alexia Weso; and a God daughter, Lynette Wychesit. Viola was preceded in death by: her former husband, Roy Powless; 3 daughters, Mary, Kathy, Glendora; 2 sons, Ray, Harry; her parents; 3 sisters; and 3 brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Neopit with the Rev. David McElroy O.Praem officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Carol Maskewit residence, N276 Max Martin Road, Keshena from 5:00pm on Monday until the time of the service on Wednesday.
