Obituary

Walter J. Cox, age 72, of Neopit passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at his home. Walter was born on August 11, 1953, in Keshena to the late William and Mary Jane (Washinawatok) Cox. In his younger years he enjoyed logging and graduated from Shawano High School in 1971. Walter attended Marquette University, St. Norbert and UWGB and earned a bachelor’s degree. On September 2, 1972, he was united in marriage to Roberta Warrington at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Together they spent a wonderful 43 years together before Roberta’s passing in 2016. In June of 1986, Walter got his dream job as a Menominee Game Warden; where he worked for the past 33 years before retiring in 2019. He was proud to be a hunter safety teacher for many years and served in the Conservation Congress. In Walter’s free time, he enjoyed fly fishing, gardening, trapping, cutting wood, being outdoors and playing cribbage with his brother, Mike.

Walter is survived by his children, Michelle (Gary) Frechette, James (Carey) Cox, Jeffrey Cox and Lindsay (Josh) Besaw; grandchildren, Marina, Garrison, Bode, Aloysius, Logan, Allysia, Jalen, Ashton, Ryan, Mikena, Quinten, Kylee, Jamison, Joshua, Jr., Darnell and Olivia; great-grandchildren, Adrien, Jr., Ivy and Melȃ; siblings, Diana Waukau, Sharon Quinney, William Cox, Jr., Mary “Deb” Cox, Jana Cox and Douglas (Jean) Cox, Sr. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Walter is preceded in death by his wife, Roberta; sisters, Karen Waukau and Faye Fish; and parents, William and Mary Jane Cox.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit with Fr. Hanz Christian officiating. Visitation will be held at the family residence N1552 Crow Settlement Road Neopit, WI 54150 starting on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 2:00 pm until the time of the procession on Thursday. Burial will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery following the service.
