Walter J. Maass, age 89, of Shawano, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 23, 2014. Walter was born in South Milwaukee on February 18, 1925 to the late Rudolph and Emily (Gross) Maass. On March 10, 1945 in California, Walter was united in marriage to Golda Ingram. Walter is a 1949 graduate of UW-Madison and worked for the City of Milwaukee for 36 years as a Tax Assessor. After retirement, Walter and Golda moved to Eagle River for 22 years and eventually ending up in Shawano. First they lived in Mason Woods and then moved to the Cottages. Walter and Golda loved to travel out west where they had a second home in Apache Junction, Arizona. While there, they enjoyed rock hunting and Walter loved cutting, grinding and polishing the rocks. He loved to share the rocks with his great-grandson, Lliam who especially treasured these rocks. Walter is also a U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran of World War II. Walter is survived by his wife, Golda of Shawano, by his son, Michael (Sue) Maass of Florida, his daughter, Maurine Maass of Eagle River, his granddaughter, Jennifer (Pastor Will) Harley of Winner, SD, his grandson, Ryan (Shannon) Maass of East Troy. He is further survived by his great-grandchildren, Lliam Harley, Livia Harley and Elise Maass, his brothers, Lyle (June) Maass of South Milwaukee and Glenn (Gerrie) Maass of Shawano and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Walter is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Eric Maass. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Divine Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 102 Northridge Drive in Shawano, with Rev. Paul Kuehn officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The family wishes to deeply thank the entire staff at the Cottages for their wonderful care and friendship. They also extend thanks to Sandy and Jim Squiller for their kindness over the years
