Wilmar Carl Westphal, age 92 of Bonduel, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011 in Shawano, surrounded by his wife and family hearing the song "Angels We Have Heard on High". Born on March 12, 1919 in Appleton, he was the son of the late William R. and Helen (Popp) Westphal. Wilmar lived his whole life on the Bonduel dairy farm that he loved. On December 5, 1942 he was united in marriage to Martha Bohm at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in the Town of Angelica. After marriage the couple made their home on the Westphal Dairy farm where they raised their seven children. Wilmar enjoyed the farm and the woods where he cooked maple syrup, fed the birds and watched the wild turkeys and deer graze. As a sportsman, he hunted game and fished sturgeon, salmon and panfish, even into retirement. He loved the land and visited the crops on his ATV until his final days. Wilmar was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. "I Love to Tell the Story" was the song most sung by his tenor voice in the quartet in which he sang in for more than 50 years. He was also active in the men's choir, an elder of the church, chairman of the congregation, money counter, and a member of the cemetery committee. He supported both the church and the Christian Day School. Wilmar was also a volunteer fireman for the Town of Hartland and a member of the bowling league. In addition to farming he was also a Hartland-Richmond Insurance Company Agent. Wilmar loved the mountains and traveled with his family to Germany, Israel, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Minnesota and Washington. He fished and hunted wild game in Wisconsin, Colorado, British Colombia and Ontario and returned with deer, elk, moose, mountain goat, as well as blueberries he had picked. His home was filled with family or visitors for all holidays and family celebrations. His laughter and hunting stories while playing cards or dominoes were always enjoyed. He played cards with friends in his card clubs and bowled on a league. Wilmar was a Green Bay Packers fan and he and Martha were avid dancers. He will be remembered as a person who was always kind and willing to help anyone.
